As we approach the final week of term 1 we are so pleased that we have been able to achieve our goals of welcoming parents/carers into school to meet with the class teachers and also today Mr Campbell gathered all of the children together for Celebration assembly! Our second, class cake sale took place yesterday as well.
On Thursday, 21st October we are walking to Church for our Harvest Celebration. The children will share some songs they have been enjoying with their class and it will be a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect and be thankful for what we have. We are supporting the Foodbank please see the Harvest information in the Szapp feed and the list of items listed below that are needed. These may be brought into school from Monday, 18th October and will be collected by the foodbank from school on Thursday morning. The Church will be serving coffee for parents/carers from 9.15am.
Our doors are open again over this weekend for the West Bristol Arts trail 11-3pm on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th. Please do pop in to the school hall to view our exhibition, ‘Bristol at the heart of our art.’ There will be a café and a workshop activity for pre-school children. Please enter via the community door at the rear of the hall, through the car park.
Whilst the term has gone well to date we are noticing that the children are really tired, a 7 week term is a long term when the children are establishing new routines. Children can demonstrate tiredness in many ways; tears, tummy aches, over excited behaviour, cross words with friends- I’m sure you know the signs! But please be reassured a busy term of school will play out in many forms and it’s quite a normal response at the end of a long stretch.
Non-perishable donations are welcome, both food and toiletries. Below is a list of the items most needed this year:
- Toilet Rolls
- Tomato ketchup
- Tinned Rice Pudding/Custard
- Tea bags
- Shower gel
- Snacks – crisps, etc
We have had another action packed week in reception this week. We are enjoying seeing our buddies at playtime. They are playing hide and seek with us, talking to us and teaching us new games. We have been learning about autumn and have enjoyed making pine cone bird feeders this week to take home to hang from the trees in our outdoor space. We have also been introduced to the iPads to practice the rhymes for our letter formation. We are really enjoying learning our sounds each day.
It was a beautiful, autumnal afternoon for Year 1’s forest school session yesterday. We learned all about the animals that go into hibernation around this time of year. We met a bat, a dormouse and a hedgehog and learned about what they eat and how long they hibernate for. Then we made our own hedgehogs by moulding a body out of clay and adding small twigs for the spines. We ended our session with a story about a hedgehog around the fire.
Year 2 have had a super week learning about adaptation. We have created our own animals and described their features, explaining why they are suited to a specific habitat. We have also been exploring our outside area to see what animals and plants grow in the different areas around school. We have then discussed why these plants and animals might choose to live/grow in those areas. It’s really got our brains wondering!
This has been a jam packed week for Year 3! In maths this week we have continued our addition and subtraction learning and tackled ‘exchanging’ for the first time. The children have grasped this quickly with the help of pretending to be shopkeepers and exchanging ones for tens! In English we started to look at punctuating direct speech. As you know our classes love a good chat, so it was a great opportunity to learn how we would punctuate our many conversations!
Finally we were lucky enough to enjoy a beautifully sunny forest school workshop. The focus was hibernation and the children threw themselves into making clay, hedgehogs, habitat hunting and stories around a roaring fire. What a perfect end to a busy week.
This week we have been exploring Sound in Science. We made panpipes to explore how pitch changed depending on how short or long the object is. We learnt that sound is created when an object vibrates and the louder the sound the bigger the vibration. We also learnt the pitch is higher if the object is tighter and shorter.
Year 5 have had a fantastic week this week. In Literacy, we finished reading our Power of Reading book, ‘The Matchbox Diary’ and thought about what we liked and disliked before writing a book review to summarise the book. We each then brought in our own special objects and wrote our memories in the style of a matchbox diary before decorating matchboxes.
In PE, we have continued our Netball lessons with games being played outside whilst inside, 5RW have been thinking about the role of defenders and the goalkeeper in our Handball lessons. Playing a series of mini games, 5RW thought about creating space, intercepting passes and defending a space.
Computing has seen us continue our learning about the Mars Rover. We thought about the ways the rovers (and computers) communicate with others using binary numbers and even had a go at calculating with them ourselves! Not an easy task, but the children rose valiantly to the challenge.
On Thursday at forest school, 5RW had a brilliant time thinking about how animals and minibeasts prepare for hibernation during the autumn. The children learnt how to tie knots in order to make a hibernacula, which will keep creatures safe and warm during the winter. They spent lots of time choosing the perfect, golden leaves to decorate it. The class also enjoyed sitting around the firepit to listen to a story about how the UK’s wildlife adapts to the cold weather. It was a lovely way to spend the morning!
This week in Year 6 we have been furthering our thinking about Computing Heroes. We carried out some research for our homework and then used our Computing time to make our presentations. Some of us used Powerpoint; some used Google Slides and some used Canva. We thought about Early life; WOW moments in their careers and why they can be named Computing Heroes. Some of us included a quiz at the end of our presentations to test our readers / listeners on what they had learnt! Here we are making our presentations.
