Science
Here at Christ Church School, we believe Science should be explorative, engaging and thought provoking. We encourage children to ask questions in order to make the learning purposeful for them.
Our curriculum is designed to build on what the children already know, from EYFS through to Year 6. The curriculum covers the main areas of science—biology, chemistry, and physics—and lessons are designed to spark curiosity through practical activities, talk, and thinking skills. This approach matches the mastery style used across the school. Pupils learn important scientific knowledge as well as how to work like a scientists. In every topic, children are taught to question, make predictions, carry out fair tests, gather data carefully, spot patterns, and explain their results using evidence. These skills are taught alongside science subject knowledge. This approach supports teachers to ensure pupils understand new ideas clearly and check for any misunderstanding.
We are extremely lucky to be situated centrally within Bristol. We make sure to utilise this by visiting many local attractions, such as Bristol University and Museum. We are also able to invite 'science ambassadors' from local businesses, into school This allows the children to see how their growing science knowledge, can be applied in a real world setting, as well as making the learning tangible and engaging
As a school, we work hard to demonstrate our high standard of Science provision and this was affirmed when we were awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark award. External experts were able to see the range of real life opportunities, knowledge and exploration that the children have access to at our school, as well as high quality teaching and learning from the staff and children.
This year we have teamed up with nine other schools from our NW24 partnership to be a part of the STEM Enthuse project which comes with funding. This is allowing us to focus on developing teaching skills, working with STEM ambassadors and running high profile and fun STEM initiatives at school.
