Music

At Christ Church our aims are to:

  • develop a love of music across all year groups
  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
  • learn to sing and to use their voicesTo create and compose music on their own and with others
  • have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument

At Christ Church we use the “Get on Board – Music Curriculum for Bristol”. This has been developed by Bristol Plays Music and our very own Mrs Ford was involved in its formation. It is a resource tailored to Bristol schools and provides lesson ideas for Reception to Year 6. The whole school follows the same theme each term and this can then be integrated and built upon during weekly singing assemblies. The first two themes of water and air include sea shanties and music based around kites, balloons and aeroplanes – all of which have Bristol links. Learning during terms 3 and 4 is based on rhythm and pitch, where children have opportunities to explore songs, part-singing and singing together. The final two terms provide children with a chance to develop their listening skills with “Minute of Listening” lessons and also learn about the history and chronology of music.

Children in Key Stage 2 are offered music tuition from peripatetic instrument teachers and some classes in Key Stage 2 partake in whole class instrument lessons, delivered by Bristol Plays Music teachers. There are choirs offered throughout the year for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. Please refer to the Music and Arts page to find out about the musical events on offer at Christ Church and the regular performances we work towards.
