Year 1 - Waterproof coats and scurrying hedgehogs

This week Year 1 have been learning about materials and their properties in Science. We sorted everyday items from the classroom and learned to distinguish between the object and what it’s made from. We then took to the playground in search of objects with certain properties such as bendy, absorbent and shiny. When we returned to the classroom we played a game where the children had to guess the property just using the list of items found as clues!

We put our knowledge of materials and their properties to the test by developing a coat for Percy the Park Keeper that would keep him warm and dry. We used paper, plastic, metal and fabric as part of a fair test to see which were waterproof. We discussed which of the material’s properties, along with being waterproof, would make a suitable coat for Percy. We then deigned the perfect waterproof (and squirrel-proof) coat for Percy, using labels to show the materials it would be made from.

In DT we carefully planned and designed a moving picture using a slider mechanism which depicted a scene of a hedgehog scurrying back to it’s leaf-pile home, set against a snowy winter scene. Before construction, we listed the items we would need to make our moving pictures and carefully considered how to ensure it would be successful. By following our plans and success criteria, we ended up with some super hedgehogs scurrying back to their home.

Well done for another fantastic term Year 1. You should be very proud of yourselves for everything you’ve achieved this year. Have a wonderful holiday and well deserved rest!
