Welcome back and welcome to our new families joining our school. We have had a wonderful first week settling in to our new classrooms. The children have done so well and seem happy to be back together with their friends.
Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to refresh our school site during the holiday period; our cleaners, site manager Mr Ford, builders and decorators as well as the Christ Church staff team who had everything prepped and ready for a calm welcome on Monday morning.
Children in years 1-6 have been on a walk inside, around school to orientate themselves within our school building and to see what the other year groups are doing and where they are. It has also been great to hear the buzz of children in the IT suite, practical room and outside for P.E on our freshly painted games court. Class 6BB started their swimming lessons at the pool today. We are in full swing!
All of our new Reception children are attending in small groups to get to know each other and the school adults, to explore the classroom and the woodland playground and to begin their learning journey at our school.
As we end the first week the main observation I have made is of the acts of kindness I have heard of, not only by the children in school but also within our community; whether it is offering to help someone, a kind word, saying thank you- to list just a few. What a positive way to start a new school year.
Mr Campbell journeyed around school this morning for the first Christ Church Calvacade of the school year to celebrate the children who had achieved values certificates this week. If you are not familiar with The Cavalcade ask your child(ren) to explain what it is-it will be interesting to hear what they say!
Curriculum newsletters have been sent via email and Szapp for Years 1-6 and year group presentations by the class teachers will be shared during next week, to introduce the routines and expectations for each year group. Homework and spellings will begin next Friday for years 2-6.
The children look so incredibly smart, we know this has been a huge challenge for some parents/carers as the supply chain of uniform items with our school logo has been delayed. Please don’t worry the children will not be in trouble and there is plenty of good quality second-hand uniform being shared and also available at Mary’s Living and Giving shop in Clifton Village. Thank you to our PTA for achieving this. We will continue to monitor if our supplier is able to return to ‘normal’ stock availability.
School is refreshed and ready for Adventures new!
It is fantastic to see our children enjoying the refreshed school!
You will hopefully have noticed the newly painted games court and pirate ship ready for our Christ Church Pirates to set sale on new adventures! Inside, school has been freshly painted throughout and the children's toilets have got new sinks and are looking good for the beginning of the school year!
It is wonderful to see all the PE happening inside and out and use of our wonderful creative facilities like the practical room.
Wow what an exciting week we have had meeting all the children and their families. The children in reception have been incredible and it’s been amazing seeing them come into their classrooms so excitedly. The children have enjoyed exploring, playing with new toys, singing and speaking to us with confidence about foods they like and what their favourite toys are.
One of the highlights has been going to the woodland area to play on the pirate ship. We are so proud of reception and cannot wait for next week when the children will meet in bigger groups and have more fun together!
Thank you to all the parents and carers for your support this week with settling the children.
This week we had the opportunity to tour our school grounds. We were shown some important places we will be visiting throughout this year such as the library and the practical room. We really enjoyed seeing older year groups at work and were amazed by how quiet Year 6 were! We also visited the office team and can't wait to use the outdoor classroom again.
Year 2 One night far from here
In Year 2 we have been busy getting to know our new classrooms and have already enjoyed lots of great learning. We have shown our super knowledge of numbers by completing hundred squares and shared our brilliant phonic knowledge with our teachers.
We have learnt how to use watercolours by painting self-portraits. They look amazing and will make our classrooms look fantastic!
This week we have also been introduced to our new Power of Reading book ‘One Night Far from Here’. We have learnt about a lot of animals we haven’t heard of before and are looking forward to learning more about them and their habitats.
Well, what a week it’s been! Year Three have settled beautifully into their new routines and we are really enjoying getting to know each other. We began this week with lots of ‘Get To Know Me’ activities/games and enjoyed making birthday cards for each other to give out over the year. Another of our treats was having a little tour of our school, which most had not seen for a few years.
The children are really intrigued by our new book ‘Into the Forest’ and generated some fantastic questions all about the boy on the front cover.
In Maths, we started looking at place value using counters and dienes. The children already have a fantastic understanding from their learning in Year 2!
Year 4 Romans, SPAG and This is Me!
Year 4 have been off to a cracking start this week! We started the week by creating a piece of art called This Is Me. The children used colours and patterns which they thought represented themselves and then wrote short facts about themselves which they were proud of. It was a great opportunity to be creative and celebrate all of our differences.
In SPAG, we did a carousel of activities to remind ourselves of the key skills we use every day in our learning. We used pipe cleaners to spell letters, played Bananagrams, edited newspaper reports, generated vocabulary by looking at a mystical setting and wrote short pieces of creative writing. It was all go in the classroom!
We also had a Roman themed morning where we found out our new History enquiry question 'How did the Roman Empire have an impact on Britain?'. We learnt all about Roman numerals and then used them to create a game using a Roman dice and we designed our own Roman shields using colours and symbols typical of the Roman army.
What a fantastic start to Year 5, it has been wonderful to see everyone so happy and motivated. We have had a busy week, here are a few photos of the work we have been doing in class.
Year 6 'What We Know About Climate Change'
Year 6 have taken the new term in their stride and had a fantastic first week back at school. They were straight in to apostrophes and place value on Monday, while taking time to also consider their hopes and dreams for the year ahead. Lots of children are excited about new opportunities and can't wait to see all the new Reception children in school, who they will "buddy" in due course. As the week has progressed, we have launched our computing topic which saw the children learning about Caesar ciphers, Nth term ciphers and Pig Pen ciphers. There was almost smoke coming out of some ears as they battled persistently to solve the codes! We have also started our Geography topic of Climate Change and asked lots of important questions such as "How will climate change affect our future?" Ask your children as the term progresses to see what they have discovered!
It is so wonderful to see everyone back at school in their new classes - introduced below!: (ICB to follow next week and we look forward to introducing our Reception classes in a couple of weeks time)

It will be checked 1-2 times/week and those requests will also be included in our prayers.
The return of the Christ Church Cavalcade
Today saw the return of The Friday Cavalcade - a journey of celebration through school. The theme this week was our school values, with children earning certificates for demonstrating those values. As always there was music to accompany the assembly - country was playing today, with the wonderful voice of John Denver. There was lots of dancing and clapping to add to the atmosphere - yee-haa!!!
Bristol at the Heart of our Art
We are delighted to be participating again in the bi-annual North West Bristol Arts trail - exhibiting over the weekend of 16th & 17th October in our school halls.
During the w/c 27th September we will have a whole school Arts Week working to the theme 'Bristol at the Heart of our Art'. We are so lucky to live in the heart of Bristol, a city which brims with art, architecture, music and performance. We will be studying our city and the artists who capture it to inpsire our own artwork for the Arts Trail.
“ Bristol is a vibrant city, heaving with culture and worth exploring. My aim is for my paintings to bring just a little bit of that into people’s homes!…I love what I do and I hope that comes across in my pictures..” Jenny Urquhart
