We could feel the excitement this morning as Year 4 arrived equipped ready for their day out at Bristol Forest school. It is the first time we have been anticipating the arrival of a coach since March 2020. It was a time to reflect and look forward to the further trips planned for the weeks ahead. Please see the report from Year 4 about their day.
Whilst we are not able to invite parents/carers into school we have made best endeavours to record and celebrate what we have been doing. Our weekly newsletters are a great platform for this, but in addition we have class assemblies from Years 2 and 5 to share with you this week.
Also, please click on the link to a whole school presentation about our learning inspired by ‘What we will build,’ by Oliver Jeffers. The children through the school have discussed some important and pertinent themes; friendship, division and conflict, peace and unity, equality and diversity, building a future, building identity, what makes me, me and my hopes and aspirations. It has been a thought-provoking project for our whole school community. The children have learned about some key people who have spoken up about these themes across the world.
Please see the letter sent today regarding assessment and reporting arrangements for terms 5 and 6.

This week in Reception we have been learning how to be palaeontologists by searching for clues to discover fossils and dinosaur bones. We have learned how fossils are created and which tools to use to unearth them carefully. We were so inspired that we made our own fossils by imprinting dinosaurs into clay and we drew our own dinosaur skeletons using white crayons. As a class we have been reciting poems about our favourite dinosaurs – watch out for our performances later in the term.
In Maths we have been learning about ‘Tangrams’ a collection of shapes that can fit together to make a square and rearranged to create different pictures. We have been making our own animal tangrams. It was great fun!
This term, Year 1 children are having fun learning the names of fruits and vegetables pretending they are on their bike and they are shopping at a French market. They are learning to say: je voudrais (I would like), une banane (a banana), une pomme (an apple), une poire (a pear) … We are using a song called Sur ma bicyclette (On my bike, by Audrey Johnson from Petits Zouzous). Parents/carers, you can find it on Youtube and listen to it with your children! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R7VvIq698s).
Year 1 Wild Plants and Letter Writing
This week in Science, Year 1 have been learning all about wild plants. We went on a wild plant hunt outside to try and find out which are the most common around school. We kept a tally of the plants we found and used counting in fives to help us find the total number. Some of the wild plants we found included daisies, dandelions, buttercups and ivy.
In Literacy this week, Year 1 have been writing letters to Orion from our story ‘Orion and the Dark’. We thought about what we could say to Orion to reassure him when he is feeling scared and wrote him some top tips for staying calm. We explored the story further by making models of the character Dark and by using musical instruments to create sounds of the dark.
This week Year 2 have been busy bees, learning about direction and position in Maths.
They created their own routes using grids and had lots of fun using I-pads to direct their Bee-bots to the flower.
In Art this week the children used oil pastels to conjure up the leafy forest scene from our Power of Reading book 'Rapunzel'. They learned how to add texture to their pictures and listened to relaxing forest music as they concentrated.
What an exciting week of learning we've had in Year 2!
Year 3 have had another productive week! One highlight was a team-building afternoon, where the children were given roles in their group (e.g. messenger, timekeeper etc…) and were challenged to make a bridge out of paper, 4 pieces of cellotape and some glue. Their only requirement was that it had to be lifted off the ground to hold the weight of a pen. They worked brilliantly in their teams and built some cleverly-designed bridges.
The children have been enjoying their Ukulele lessons; this week, they learnt the F chord, which was a little trickier. They also learnt about the different lengths of notes, using words to help them. One of their favourite parts is playing along to pieces of music, like ‘We Will Rock You’.
Year 5 Why do some people believe God exists?
Our RE topic this term is based on the key question: Why do some people believe God exists?
We have been thinking about the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and considering how believing in God can affect people's lives differently. In our most recent lesson, we learnt that the Bible is split in to the Old Testament and New Testament; the OT is made up of 39 books and the NT is made up of 27 books. We then played a game where we had to find the page number for a book, chapter and verse. The person who could find and read out the verse first was the winner. Once we had orientated ourselves with the Bible, we used the Bible verses to learn about characteristics of God.
In French we are continuing to learn parts of the body. This week we learnt to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Tête, Epaules, Genoux et Pieds) Madame Maurier said we were in fine voice and was really impressed with our accents and efforts!
WOW - what a week for year 6! The first week in May has brought with it a burst of enthusiasm and added pizazz.
Master potter James Newbold led a clay workshop for both classes. We produced an array of African Masks inspired by a variety of traditions, rituals, and spiritual meanings.
In Maths, we've started focusing on Ratio - looking at how much of one thing there is compared to another.
Today saw Netball club host its first session. Miss Barsby and Mr Curry were very impressed and are already looking forward to future sessions!
The weather was certainly in our favour for our first session of netball practise. We had a great turn out with 17 Year 6 children attending. Fingers crossed we can start competing with other teams soon!
