With just one week before we hope to see you all, we are getting very excited and I am sure there is much anticipation at home too. Please see the letter I sent on Tuesday stating we are looking forward to welcoming all children back into school on 8th March.
Next week please look out for a ‘return to school,’ Google form to ensure we have all the information up to date for your child; contact details, medical information etc.
Lunches will be available to book online. Shine will be communicating with parents/carers regarding taking/amending bookings for the remainder of term 4.
I will also send out a letter with reminders about our school operational routines and procedures that we are still required to have in place in order to keep our community safe.
I am sure there will be a range of emotions displayed over the coming week and feeling nervous about transition back into school is perfectly normal. Over the coming week the class teachers will be talking to the children about what to expect when they return and to reassure them there are lots of activities and learning planned for them. We are fortunate that we have already in place additional teaching capacity, so there will be plenty of adults to welcome and settle the children back into school.
The parent/carer telephone calls/Google meets have been invaluable this week (and will continue through next week) - if you have anything further you wish to share with your child’s class teacher please do so via Google Classroom or the school office. There will also be opportunity within the ‘return to school,’ Google form.
I hope you are able to enjoy the sunshine this weekend.
Reception, Tabby McTat and Pizza Making
This week reception have enjoyed completing lots of fun activities based on another one of Julia Donaldson’s books ‘Tabby McTat.’
The children at home and in school really enjoyed sharing their half term news and using their super phonic skills to write postcards to friends and family. Some of the children at home even used their daily exercise to walk to the postbox to send their postcards to family. We were so impressed with the writing and the fun the children managed to have even during a half term in lockdown! One family even had a beach day all in the comfort of their own home.
The children channelled their creativity again this week making toadstool pizzas and creating pictures of Tabby McTat. The children in school enjoyed looking carefully at the book and painting pictures of Tabby McTat.
They continued learning about the numbers in the world around them and this week learnt about 9 and 10. They have explored tens frames, counting 9 and 10 objects and completing numbers lines to 10 by finding missing numbers.
Great effort reception children!
Year 1 are really enjoying our new story ‘The Bog Baby’ by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward. After listening to the story, we made and described our own Bog Babies and then designed homes for them. Our story is set in a woodland in springtime so this term we will be learning all about the seasons and weather. In Science, we have been observing the weather and this week we made wind socks to help us measure the direction of the wind.
This week we have launched our space topic. We have had a really enthusiastic response from the children so we are looking forward to an exciting term. To begin the children have created mind maps showing everything they know about space already. They have proved themselves to be a very knowledgeable bunch! As part of the space topic we also listened to ‘Mars’ by Holst. Whilst listening we responded through art. Some children showed how the music made them feel and others drew a memory that it evoked.
We have also been busy learning about shape. Some children got creative and created their own 3D shapes at home.
Year 3 Wild robot and Stone Age Projects
Year 3 have been very busy yet again and got up to all sorts! We have started a new book this term called ‘Wild Robot’. This has led us to doing lots of research and designing of robots which has been so interesting! Aurora in 3HR came up with a great design for a robot that beats Covid 19 and also dances! Attached is Jonah’s in depth research into the subject, we can’t wait to keep reading our new book and discover even more. We also did some sensory artwork where we listened to a piece of classical music and painted what we felt. It was so relaxing and everyone became so immersed, as you can see from the pictures!
Everyone at home has been just as busy creating incredible stone age projects, planning amazing imaginative narratives and maths using measure which was really challenging but everyone persevered and we are extremely proud. Thank you for another sensational week Year 3!
This week in Year 4 we introduced our fantastic new Power of Reading text, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. To help familiarise ourselves with the main events of the story, we broke it down into our very own story map. You can see the children have thought carefully through their work, with stunning illustrations and sometimes adding key words and captions too. The bright colours of the Amazon rainforest have brought some sunshine to us this week and we can't wait to learn more about the environmental issues facing the Amazon today.
This week in Year 5 we have started our topic of Ancient Greece. We have learnt about the city states of Athens, Sparta, Delphi and Corinth and thought about how it is that we can know so much about Ancient Greece nowadays. In Literacy, we have explored Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece; learnt about Greek Gods and Godesses and made our own Top Trump cards. Here are some examples:
We have also finished off our Science topic of Forces and started our new DT unit, entitled "Celebrating Culture and Seasonality". Look out for some pictures of us in the kitchen next week!
Year 6 Portal Doors and Algebra
Year 6 have been busy thinking about doors and their meanings in Literacy this week. Over three days they have been exploring what doors could represent in the hands of a writer; entering a world of possibility, a world where things are not only hidden but often closed off and restricted. The class have been building up their writing to create a portal story – a world to the unknown. The children also designed their portal doors too (Mimi, Zephie).
Maths has been a dip of the toe into the lovely world of Algebra with exploration of one and two step function machines. Battling with algebraic expression or creating our own algebra puzzles.
In the afternoons there has been the usual mix of mindful, musical and artistic activities.
Mia and Elsa both produced an amazing self-portrait.
World Book Day - Thursday 4th March
On Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. Mr Campbell will be leading a special World Book Day Assembly. Watch out for information next week.
This year the World Book Day token is an electronic voucher that you can print or show on your phone. The voucher date is being extended due to book shops currently being closed. Many of the supermarkets and WH-Smiths are stocking the £1 books. Please see the World Book Day voucher attached and below for further information.
On Thursday afternoon we would like you to join in with a whole school read. We would like you to read in the strangest place you can….. maybe outdoors, hanging upside down or in a cupboard somewhere! Parents and carers you are welcome to join in with this reading! Please share your photos in the World Book Day sharing station.
We can’t wait to see where and how you celebrated books as a family.
Thank you for your continued support.
