Over this week we have had a variety of different sounds permeating through our school. We are participating in National Story telling week and every year group has been learning a story from around the world. Year 2 had an African drumming workshop on Tuesday, and on Thursday Year 3 were transported back to the Stone Age. The costumes were great, take a look at the Year 3 article, thank you to parents/carers for supporting us with this experience.
Next week is Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme is ‘My Voice Matters,’ you can find out more here https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/. We will be doing some activities on this theme in class and in our assemblies. On Tuesday 6th it is Safer Internet Day and we will use this opportunity to learn and reinforce strategies about how to keep safe online. On Thursday, Year 4 will be having a day to celebrate all they have learned about the Anglo Saxons.

‘What’s a Gruffalo?’ – Reception know!
That’s right – We all ‘took a stroll through the deep dark wood’ this week! We read The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and joined in with the parts that we already knew! We created some wonderful models using playdough and loose parts and drew some fantastic Gruffalo pictures that have really impressed our adults. We loved retelling the story with our friends using puppets that we made and our small world figures. Outside we created woodland walk obstacle courses and enjoyed playing with some ‘Gruffalo Crumble!’
We thought of the woodland creatures we knew and used My First Book of Woodland Animals by Zoe Ingram to learn more about them. We also learnt about some animals that we had not heard of before. Animal habitats and homes gave us lots to discuss and we worked well together to build some of our own.
Pairs and doubles were our focus for maths this week. We read Simon Sock by Sue Hendra and enjoyed making pairs and then using this information to help us know if a number was odd or even. We doubled numbers by using mirrors to help us and we also used a magic doubling pot!
In phonics we learnt ‘air’ and ‘er’ this week and looked at some double letters in words. We have continued to work hard at writing captions in our books.
What a wonderful woodland week! We look forward to the week ahead.
Year 1 – Storytelling and positivity
Wow what an exciting week in Year 1! To celebrate national storytelling week, Year 1 learned a shortened version of Anansi and the Golden Pot. We learned about the history of Anansi’s character and how nobody knows exactly where he came from, but thanks to the Akan people, this trickster spider has survived thousands of years just through the magic of spoken word. As a class we came up with a story map which we will use as prompts when writing our stories into books next week.
On Thursday we joined a Zoom where we listened to the Swapna Haddow, author of Bad Panda, read the first chapter of her new unreleased book, making us some of the first people to ever hear it! As if that wasn’t enough, we also spent the week making finger puppets for puppet shows and publishing our own books all in celebration of stories and storytelling.
In maths we are continuing with our learning on place value within 20. This week we worked to find one more and one less than any given number and explored number lines by filling in the missing numbers.
Year 1 had their first yoga session with Carolyn this year. It was fantastic to see the children show focus during this time and recognising the importance of the connection between mind and body. We’re looking forward to continuing these sessions into next term.
In PSHE we learned about overcoming challenges through a story called the Hope-a-potomus written by Chris Smith and Greg James. The story follows a hippo who is on a journey to find water; on his journey he encounters treacherous terrain and animals who try and convince him to give up, but this doesn’t stop the hippo. We discussed how negativity can be a normal feeling when we experience difficulty, but choosing positivity and perseverance is often far more productive. In order to explore this, we were challenged to create a safe hippo home from wooden blocks in our bug groups. The children shared words of encouragement and managed to work around hurdles, such as not having enough blocks. We hope to carry this positive energy through with us until the end of term, well done Year 1!
In Year 2, we have been making owl weavings. They were tricky to complete, took several weeks, and needed lots of patience. Some owls are finished and others need the finishing touches next week – ready to fly home with their owner and perch on a shelf!
On Tuesday we had a visit from Margarie who brought with her a huge collection of African drums! She explained that they are called Jembe drums and are to be played with our hands. She taught us how to play different rythmns and beats and we took turns to try out the different sized drums and play our own music.
We have also been learning about Judaism. We have been exploring what Jewish people believe, how they celebrate Shabbat and looking at special Jewish objects.
Unfortunately both myself and Mrs Duquemin caught the lurgy this week so could only join the end of the week! However, we joined for a fantastic end of the week. We were so delighted to use some of our trip money to invite in ‘The History Guy’ company to run a stone age day. All the children looked fantastic in their fancy dress and were very much in character throughout the day. The children were able to explore artefacts, create cave paintings, make weapons with flint, become archaeologists and hunt! It was an amazing day and the children were so inspired. The Stone Age topic has come to an end and the knowledge and enthusiasm around it has been fantastic.
Year 4 - Baba Yaga’s Black Geese
Year 4 have really risen to the challenge during National Storytelling Week. We tasked them to learn a traditional tale (Baba Yaga’s Black Geese) off by heart and retell it with bundles of energy and expression!
We have also LOVED the wonderful Amazon rainforest projects that have come in this week – from slideshows to dioramas, posters to board games. The children’s enthusiasm and effort has shone through.
Year 5 have been learning all about Antarctica, thanks to their Literacy text: Ice Trap. After 3 weeks of studying Ernest Shackleton and hearing all about his brave adventure, they have now moved on to looking at a book called Everest, which is the remarkable story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. As well as studying these two books, Year 5 spent a week writing a script to accompany a video clip about life in Antarctica. They researched facts and then pulled all the information together to become voice-overs. They then presented their work while the video clip played in the background. We were really proud of all that they achieved in such a short space of time. Their facts, scripts and presentations were phenomenal! Well done Y5!
Storytelling week has been lots of fun. We perfected retelling our story from Kiribati - this was a collaborative effort to think of different actions for the words; we recorded this on Thursday for others to enjoy. Also, we took part in a live online storytelling workshop by Steven Camden. Steven is a leading spoken-word poet. He writes radio plays, teaches storytelling in schools, and is an author. His books include ‘My Big Mouth’ and ‘Summer School and Cyborgs.’ Steven took us on a journey through a writing process – building up ideas and firing our enthusiasm for storytelling!

After the culmination of the football league last week, there was a tense wait for the results to come in. However, the wait was worth it. The final week's results of four victories out of four led to Christ Church winning their league - amazing!!! We celebrated in today's assembly with the ceremonial walk into the hall, to the bassy beats of Sugarhill Gang's Apache; this was followed by a whole school dance to top it all off - our family and friends were even seen to join in at the back of the hall.
Stepping foot first into a real challenge this week – Computing club made their own VERY successful step counters using Micro:bits. The children examined the code; programmed it using iPads; uploaded it to the Micro:bits and then attached them to their ankles using the straps provided. I was absolutely blown away by their teamwork in ensuring everyone was able to do it. Well done!
