Yr 6 Boat Building

14th June 2018
Year 6 spent Thursday in the company of Heritage England looking in detail at the dock area of Bristol. They walked around the Cumberland Basin area learning lots of amazing facts and stories about Bristol's engineering celebrities and maritime heritage.

They also visited the Underfall Yard (and now know what an underfall is!) and had a boat ride around the docks learning even more information about Bristol's fascinating history.

The second half of the day was spent in the entrepreneurial hub at Temple Meads-The Engine Shed. Under the guidance of the company My Future Your Future they considered future career options in the company of volunteers from the world of law, engineering, chemistry and boat-building. They were then invited to build a kit boat that had been created by the designer of the Matthew. These beautiful boats will be launched as part of an inter-schools competition at the Harbourside Festival on Saturday 21st July at 12.00. You will find the launch site underneath the industrial cranes near the M-Shed. The winning boat earns £100 for their school so good luck Year 6!!

The day was rounded off with a complimentary train ride from Temple Meads back to Clifton Down station which included a safety briefing by the representative of the Severn Line train service ahead of the children's independent journeys to secondary school.

It was a long and busy day full of new experiences and all of the children rose to the occasion representing their school admirably. Well done year 6.
