Yr 4 Maths Workshop

8th February 2017

This week Yeas 4-6 were involved in the first of a series of Maths workshops in school sponsored by the construction company Wilmott  Dixon.

The company are currently involved in construction work on Bristol University buildings and as part of their social engagement programme they have offered Christ Church children the opportunity to take part in a tetrahedron challenge and also a team model build challenge.

The tetrahedron activity involved learning about elements of the construction process in order to gradually build a  3D tetrahedron. There was also an opportunity for plenty of practise of our core school values in the teamwork and  co-operative elements of the challenge. The children started by building a simple stage 1 triangular based pyramid in small teams of 4. They then combined with another 4 to create a stage 2 structure which contained 4 of the original pyramids.

This was followed by the stage 3 construction where 16 of the pyramids were fastened together to make the final tetrahedron structure. The added challenge set by Hannah was to complete the final stage in absolute silence working as a whole class-team using only sign language.

We were proud to find out that Christ Church is the first school EVER to complete this challenge. Wow!! We then evaluated our work and thought about what we could learn from our experience.

We had an absolutely brilliant morning working with  Hannah and we can't wait for  our next model build challenge in Term 4.
