10th June 2016
Cutting the ribbon
The street party!
On Friday 10th June 2016 we celebrated our official opening of our new school environment!
It has been quite a journey to get here!
- Autumn 2013 - Discussions with Bristol City Council about expansion started. At that time the school was bursting at the seams and 2 double classroom portacabins in the playground meant that there was no space to expand without doing some serious redevelopment of the school site. As redevelopment/refurbishment was not within the city council's remit, we applied to the central government 'academies capital maintenance fund' for condition repair of the existing school, in conjunction with funding from Bristol City Council to also expand the school from 1.5 to 2 form entry.
- Spring 2014 - Stride Treglown Architects, and Ridge Project Managers/Quantity Surveyors/ Engineers, helped us to put together the designs, scope, programmes, costings and contract for a building project. Capital funding was approved in April 2014, planning permission followed quickly after in June 2014, and works started on the school site in July 2014.
- Summer 2014 - Summer 2015 - an intense year followed of working hard with the builders, BAM Construction Ltd, to build the new wing, demolish parts of the old building, redevelop and refurbish the existing site into a cohesive single building primary school. All of this while the school remained fully operational on the site!
- Autumn 2015 - Summer 2016 - the school has been settling into our fantastic new learning environment - dealing with the usual teething problems and gradually making the building our own with beautiful displays of children's work and new playground equipment.
On 10th June 2016 we were able to celebrate this 2.5 year journey and achievement with a Grand Opening Event in conjunction with also celebrating our Queen's 90th Birthday! It was such a happy and joyful occassion!
Invited guests (Bristol's strategic planners and the team that made this project such a success) joined the school children and staff in a celebration assembly of thanks, and singing that nearly brought the roof down!
While the invited guests were then toured around the school by our capable Year 6's, the rest of the children laughed and marvelled at the entertainment (puppet shows, magicians, and circus skills) and then sat down to a well earned tea party! It was amazing to see the whole school gathered together amongst a stunning array of British red white and blue! Celebrating our Bristol engineering history, a steam engine came chugging in, to tour Mrs Jones, the Lord Mayor and our very own Queen and Prince around the playground while the children ate their tea and waved!
The cutting of the ribbon by the Lord Mayor followed at the front of the school - even the Queen paid a visit!
Having cheered the official opening of the school, parents and children then gathered in the playground for scones, strawberries, circus skills and traditional music! Bill and Mr B were even seen doing the tango!!
And finally the Clifton community and previous Christ Church School families came to see what the fuss was all about!
In all it was a day to remember! The compliments from guests, parents and the community about the school and about the amazing children of the school has been incredible. The staff of the school are very proud!
